There is a particular kind of Tuesday in November when the light is gone by four and the flat feels like somewhere you are staying temporarily rather than somewhere you actually live. Maya had been having a lot of those Tuesdays. She bought wax and fragrance oils the way other people pick up a bottle of wine on the way home: impulsively, without thinking too hard about why.
The first batch smelled wrong. Too much bergamot, not enough of whatever she was actually looking for. She poured it anyway and let it cool on the kitchen counter next to a stack of unopened post. She lit it before she had even eaten dinner. Something shifted. Not dramatically and not in any way she could explain to someone else. The particular quality of the air in the room changed, and for the first time in weeks she sat down without reaching for her phone.
Her neighbour knocked to ask what she was burning. Could she have one?
That was the beginning, though Maya would not have recognised it as such at the time.

Bergamot, clove and something that smells like the inside of a bookshop on a cold afternoon. The scent Maya kept adjusting for two years until she could not think of a single thing she would change.

Everything comes from somewhere and Maya thinks you should know where. The wax is soy, grown and processed without the things she cannot pronounce. The fragrance oils are skin-safe and phthalate-free, which matters if you are burning something in a room where you sleep. The vessels are made by a ceramicist who works alone in a small studio and has been making things with her hands for longer than Maya has been alive.
None of this makes the candles burn longer or smell better. It just means that when you buy one, you know what you bought.
